Silmy Karim: As of September 2024, Immigration Bans 7,614 Foreign Nationals

JAKARTA - As of 22 September 2024, there are 7,614 individuals listed in the Immigration exit and entry ban list. Of that total, 602 are temporary exit-banned, while 7,012 are entry-banned. As many as 1,644 entry-banned foreigners (23.5%) were on the list for the first time, while 76.5% had their entry-banned period extended.

Currently, 518 people on the exit ban list are Indonesian citizens undergoing legal proceedings. The same goes for 63 others who are foreigners who were prevented from leaving because they had not fulfilled their responsibilities in Indonesia.

"Immigration officers have the right to restrict foreigners from leaving Indonesian territory if they still have obligations in Indonesia that must be completed, such as taxes and so on," explained the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim.

Silmy also explained that according to the revision of Law 6 of 2011 on Immigration, officers can ban foreigners from entering Indonesia for a maximum of 10 years, which can be extended for another 10 years. Previously, the exit and entry ban duration was the same: six months.

"However, the extension of the entry ban also depends on the case of the criminal act the foreigner commits. In the explanation of Article 102 Paragraph (3) of the Immigration Law, it is stated that a lifelong entry ban applies if Indonesia and the foreigner's country of origin consider the person's actions a criminal act. Such as drug trafficking and terrorism," he continued.

The increase in the number on the entry ban list to 7,012 people is the government's efforts to maintain national security, specifically from the threat of transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, people smuggling, human trafficking and the risk from sexual predators entering from abroad.

"This reflects our commitment to bolstering national security. We will not hesitate to take firm action against foreigners who have the possibility to disrupt public order and security. In addition, this policy also aims to protect national interests and prevent undesirable elements from entering Indonesian territory," concluded Silmy.
