JAKARTA - The Director General of Immigration has added 90 auto gates at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport's International Arrival and Departure Terminal. This inauguration took place on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, at the Westin Hotel Nusa Dua, Bali. Of these auto gates, 60 are located in the arrival terminal, while 30 are in the departure terminal. This new installation is an addition to the 30 auto gate units that have been in operation since last February.
"As one of the primary gateways for Indonesian tourism, the average number of international arrivals at Ngurah Rai Airport reaches between 18,000 and 21,000 people per day. With the auto gate facility, the immigration inspection process only takes 15 to 25 seconds per person. This is a significant breakthrough in smoothing the immigration inspection queue and making the process more effective and efficient," stated the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, during the inauguration event.
The auto gates can be used by both Indonesian citizens and foreign travellers holding electronic visas. The immigration checks through the auto gates utilize facial recognition technology and Border Control Management (BCM). This advancement supports an integrated and seamless immigration service ecosystem for foreigners, which starts from the online visa application process and leads to a more convenient flow during immigration checks.
Silmy also noted that the number of auto gate users continues to rise each month, especially after the auto gates became accessible to children aged 6 and above. At the beginning of the auto gate's operation in February, only 17% of foreign passengers utilized the auto gates, compared to 49% of Indonesian passengers. However, as of September, the percentage of foreign auto gate users increased to 67%, while Indonesian users reached 62% of the total passengers.
The five countries with the highest number of auto gate users at the arrival terminal are as follows: Australia, with 494,313 users; China, with 150,683; England, with 113,737; France, with 108,618; and South Korea, with 105,677.
"It is important to note that improving immigration services through auto gates does not compromise security. Passengers using auto gates are checked against prevention lists and Interpol red notices. If they are on the list, their access is automatically denied," added Silmy.
As of 27 September 2024, a total of 4,722,771 foreign nationals have arrived at Ngurah Rai International Airport. This figure represents 94.2% of the total arrivals from 1 January to 27 September 2024. The top five countries with the highest arrivals are Australia, with 1,164,258 visitors; India, 411,758; China, 361,372; England, 228,948; and South Korea, 216,993.
"This is encouraging progress, and I hope that the implementation of immigration duties and functions will continue to improve in the future, not only in Bali but also across all immigration technical units both domestically and internationally," concluded Silmy.
