Indonesia Unveils Red and White Passport Design at ICAO Symposium

Montreal, Canada — The Indonesian delegation officially introduced a new design for the Indonesian passport that showcases the richness of the archipelago's culture at the ICAO Traveler Identification Program (TRIP) Symposium in Montreal, Canada. The event, held from 13 to 15 November 2024, was attended by representatives from 193 ICAO member countries, including Indonesia, and focused on current issues related to traveler identity management.

Anggiat Napitupulu, the Director of Immigration Cooperation, participated as a panelist at the symposium and described the features of the latest generation of electronic passports. He emphasized that these passports serve not only as travel documents but also as representations of Indonesian identity and culture.

"The new Indonesian passport is equipped with various advanced security features. The inclusion of 33 traditional batik motifs printed using special technology serves both aesthetic and security purposes," Anggiat explained.

He further noted that the passport chip, connected to a radio antenna, allows for safer storage of biometric data, including the holder's digital signature.

"The biodata page is made of polycarbonate, making this passport more durable and difficult to counterfeit," he added.

During the symposium, discussions also addressed the morphing technique, which poses a threat to the security of international travel documents.

"Morphing enables someone to combine the faces of two different individuals in a photo to forge identities. To counter this issue, countries worldwide are developing more sophisticated security technologies and procedures, including Indonesia," Anggiat remarked.

Indonesia has been a member of the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) network since 2019. The PKD serves as a central repository managed by ICAO for authenticating travel documents from registered countries, ensuring their validity through a standardized format for document readers. This membership allows Indonesia to exchange information with other countries regarding the verification of travel document authenticity and enhances cooperation in combating transnational crimes related to document misuse.

"We have joined the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) network, which means our passports are registered in the international travel information system. Consequently, information about the travel document will be shared with all international crossings of ICAO member countries that are also registered for PKD," Anggiat explained.

Finally, Anggiat emphasized that the new design of the Indonesian passport is part of an effort by Indonesian Immigration to strengthen the passport of the Republic of Indonesia.

"The combination of security features, materials, and the latest techniques in accordance with ICAO standards is a primary focus, ensuring that the passport is well protected while being used for international travel and also serves as an ambassador for Indonesian culture with its beautiful design," concluded Anggiat.
