Minister of Immigration and Correctional Affairs Inaugurates 30 Autogate Units at Kualanamu Airport
MEDAN - The Minister of Immigration and Correctional Affairs (Imipas), Agus Andrianto, inaugurated the operation of 30 autogates at Kualanamu International Airport, Medan, North Sumatra on Tuesday (24/06/2025). Kualanamu Airport is the fifth Immigration Checkpoint (TPI) in Indonesia to implement autogates. Previously, autogates have been operated at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport TPI in Banten, Ngurah Rai International Airport TPI in Bali, Harbour Bay International Port in Batam, and Juanda International Airport in Surabaya.
Of the total 30 autogates, 20 units are placed at international arrivals and 10 units are at international departures. The operation of the Kualanamu Airport autogates is managed by the Class I Special Immigration Office for TPI Medan. The average number of crossings for departures and arrivals at Kualanamu Airport reaches approximately 6,700 per day or 194,000 per month. Meanwhile, the number of flights at Kualanamu Airport from January to May 2025 reached 6,750 flights. Thus, the average number of flights per month is 1,350, or about 45 flights per day. Currently, Kualanamu Airport serves international flights to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia during the hajj season.
"The autogate will greatly assist the immigration inspection process, making it more effective and efficient, taking only 10-15 seconds per person. Although the process is very fast, inspection with the autogate remains secure as it uses the latest technology integrated with blacklisting systems and even Interpol. And it's not just for Indonesian citizens; the autogate can also be used by foreigners who have electronic passports and Indonesian eVisas," explained Agus.
According to him, Medan's geographical position near the Strait of Malacca makes it a suitable location for expanding autogate operations. Medan is also a center for various activities, including economy, government, and trade for the North Sumatra region and even the island of Sumatra.
On the same occasion, Minister Agus also inaugurated the Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI) Lounge , a special waiting room for migrant workers who are about to depart to work abroad.
"By combining speed, convenience, and security, this system is expected to increase passenger satisfaction with immigration services while strengthening supervision of people's crossings," concluded Agus.
