New Passport Design Postponed, Immigration Focuses on Strategic Policies to Improve Services
JAKARTA – The Directorate General (Ditjen) of Immigration has postponed the implementation of the red and white design passport, which was originally scheduled to be issued for the first time on the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's independence on August 17, 2025. This decision was made in accordance with Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 1 of 2025 regarding budget efficiency for ministries and agencies, as well as in response to public aspirations.
"After a thorough evaluation, the Directorate General of Immigration has decided to postpone the implementation of the red and white design passport. This decision was made with full consideration and responsibility, and involved many parties," stated the Acting (Plt) Director General of Immigration, Yuldi Yusman.
Yuldi further explained that budget efficiency requires the Directorate General of Immigration to review policies that will be implemented. The decision was also made after considering suggestions and input from the public, taking into account the level of urgency and the ongoing economic dynamics.
Following the launch of the new passport design on August 17, 2024, the Directorate General of Immigration actively monitored public opinion related to the policy. From August 2024 to July 2025, social media analysis from various channels collected 1,642 samples of posts. The results of the analysis showed that the public expects government policies to focus more on strengthening the substance of the passport, namely strengthening the global position of the Indonesian passport. From these sampled posts, there was also a tendency for the public to prefer service policies with more concrete impacts that can be felt and are in line with the principles of efficiency and public priority needs.
With the available budget, the Directorate General of Immigration strives to maximize immigration services and supervision through the development and maintenance of digital-based systems. Innovation does not stop at changes in physical design, but rather takes the form of strengthening more appropriate systems and services.
"It needs to be underlined that the postponement of this policy does not mean that the focus on strengthening the Indonesian Passport has stopped. Strategic steps involving relevant government agencies and all Indonesian people are needed, and we hope that we can all support each other to strengthen the Indonesian Passport," he asserted.
Responding to this, the Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, stated, "The innovations of the Directorate General of Immigration will continue, with a focus on long-term development to strengthen the Republic of Indonesia's passport through improved digital security and service efficiency. We are grateful for the public's understanding and support in facing this adjustment," concluded Minister Agus.
